not to our credit

We love because He first loved us. - 1 John 4:19 (NASB)

No man can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. - John 6:44

I think that Scripture is pretty clear that God draws us into relationship with Himself. This should be a huge pride buster. Being drawn to God is not an indicator of our merit or our worthiness. When God chooses to use us it does not mean that we are better than our peers.

I struggle to remember that I can take no credit for any part of my regeneration. I am ashamed to realize, that often when I “seek after God” I am doing it for selfish reasons. I think that if I can get close to God and just follow the rules I will be a better, more virtuous person. I put out of my mind the fact that I am a corrupt sinner, who continually falls short. Instead I choose to dwell on miniscule improvements and puff myself up. I seek God not for his glory but for my own. This needs to change.

God, break my pride and help me to seek You for Your own sake. Do not allow me to continually deceive myself about the motivation for my religion. Create in me a desire to know You for who You are and to bring You glory. Amen.

I like the openness and honesty for this one. It certainly is not easy to put shares these thoughts with the world. However, in doing so, it allows others to help keep you accountable, and encourages others in the same process.
