I keep an MP3 player whenever I'm out, listening to a book, and usually have one on hand at home. Though I have found that bringing a book to social outings can have a negative effect, especially if you are naturally a quiet or shy person: people will assume you brought the book in deference to their own attentions, which might not be the affect you want.
