Torture!
My sister has started playing the violin. The sounds emitted from the instrument are like those of an animal impaled on a red hot poker. Our house is too small to escape from the piercing sound. I might go insane.

aweee! hmmm, what's the lesson here? would it be learning how to focus in the midst or turmoil? would it be finding the "right" sound amidst all the "wrong" ones?

Hey...I'm sure your sister is practicing hard to master the violin...that said, the violin (in my humble opinion) is extremly hard to master and can even sound annoying when played by such masters.
Solution? Either move to Anchorage, or convice her to take up cello.

I teach violin and piano. It's going to sound like that for a couple of years, I'm afraid to say. You should be able to block it out eventually!
