Is Diversity Really Strong?

"I will pick a person who can do the job. But I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country."

That is what President Bush recently said about his choice to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.

This implies that his nominee will be a minority or a woman. Normally, this comment would make me very nervous. I don't think it's wise for the President to play race/gender games and posture for the public when he makes an appointment that is likely to shape this country for decades to come.

On the other hand, several well qualified nominees fit into the minority and/or female categories. Janice Rogers Brown for one is an excellent constitutional scholar who's ruling show support for our Second Amendment Rights and a strict-constructionist perspective on issues such as the so-called "privacy right" which is used to justify court legalization of abortion. Mel Martinez, a Cuban, would be the first Hispanic justice. He also displays solid conservative credidentials.

We still have to be vigilant. There are rumors that the President may choose Alberto Gonzalez, currently serving as Attourney Gerneral. This would be a disaster. Gonzales does not respect Americans rights to own firearms and has revealed that he is pro-choice.

Please pray for our country as it maneuvers this critical crossroad.

Thanks for the heads up about that topic. We do need to pray for our leaders and our country...that good leaders would be in power. Good leaders are such a blessing!

well, Roe v. Wade is settled law. A woman has a right to access medical care, including abortions.

Roe v. Wade is based on a contitutional precedent that does not exist.

It is not law it is a court order handed down by activist, partisan judges.

Settled law in every state in this nation. It was preventing "activist" male-dominated legislatures from infringing on a woman's right to choose what to do with her body. It is a medical procedure. The judges were protecting the individual women from the tyranny of male-dominated legislatures in Texas and Georgia.

This country will never alter this law - get used to it. Mind your own body's business anyway.

"he is pro-choice"
Might as well call it as it is. Pro-abortion.

As for you Mr. Anonymous. While this country is sad in what it chooses to do, it can alter the law. It our business as well since it affects our nation as a whole.

no, its not your business...I, as a woman, have a right to have an abortion. I have thankfully never faced this need, but I have friends who have and I am thankful our country allows them to have access to a medical procedure they want. Who the hell are you to tell me what to do with my body. You men need to get over yourselves.

Ms Anonymous. In our society today, abortion has become more of a scapegoat for sex without consequences. I have heard many people carelessly toss around the idea like it was going down to the store to buy a pack of gum. While it may seem to be the right choice in a select few situations, it is still killing a life.

No, abortion is a medical procedures which a woman has every right to seek. There are far too many unwanted children in the world. And our gov't doesn't teach enough about birth control methods in the school system, so most young teens have sex without even knowing how to protect themselves from pregnancy. The education system needs to be fixed. But that's a different issue. In the meantime, no one should be able to force a woman to carrying a child that she does not want.
