Three Strikes You're Dead
Crime in the Unites States is going down. According to the Bureau of Justice (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance.htm) and the Federal Bereau of Investigation (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm) the incidence of crimes has decreased while at the same time convictions and the number of prison sentences are on the rise. Unfortunately this change is occurring rather slowly and it is costing taxpayers alot of money.
I am really not a big fan of the prison system. I don't see why my hard earned money should be spent to support those will not abide by the laws of society and intrude on the rights of their fellow citizens. Instead of three strikes programs, which put habitual felons in prison without parole, I think it would be a better use of resources to spend a few cents on ammo and just shoot the villains. If it has been determined that these people are so dangerous that they can never be released into society again there is no point in prolonging their existence.
Think of the deterrent effect of a “Three Strikes You’re Dead” law. While it has been proven that the average career criminal isn't the brightest bulb in the pack, I think most of them would realize that "free" stereos really aren't worth the risk of being executed and those that fail to recognize the peril of crime would be removed permanently from society, a positive change in my estimation.

That sounds like an interesting method "Three strikes your Dead", but on the other hand, some criminals, may decide to be stupid and risk it. I don't think it would be fair to kill someone over stealing a stereo. But the people that kill others, I think that new found law would apply to them. Then again, another method could be executed for those with petty crime.
"Three strikes and your dead" Sounds like something our system should consider. As
American gov. seems to be quite easy on criminals. Criminals are being let out of prisons so easily and then they get out and go to it all over again. There should be stiffer penalties for crimes! That way at least the "brighter bulbs" would think twice (hopefully) about going out and doing all kinds of unmentionable things.
About our prison system, why prisons have some way for the residents to earn their keep, as its not fair for citizens to have to pay for a criminal's gym membership and cable television. That is kind of annoying...they should be productive too. I think anyone with too much time on their hands is a detriment to society and themselves. Taxes...arg!
Good post! It is good to hear that crime is going down.
I don't really believe crime is going down.According to the federal standards. Its seems like the government wants to make us believe it is.As for the tax payers it is a shame that we have to foot the bill, for people that get to watch cable tv all day.
Whether crime overall is going down or up, I'm not sure. I have looked at some of data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and a majority of convicts that are currently in correctional facilities have had prior convictions. A lot of convicts are repeat offenders which means that something is wrong with our prison system (as we have all commented upon). I believe that the sentences/punishment needs to be increased greatly. Corporal punishment should be more commonly used but I don't think it should apply to everyone (like theives as tuppy mentioned). Some crimes are more worthy of that punishment than others.
Keep up your posting, Rabenstrange. This is the sort of stuff that we, the readers, expect from an unemployed assistance dictator.
"Corporal punishment should be more commonly used but I don't think it should apply to everyone (like theives as tuppy mentioned)."
I beg to differ. Corporal punishment is exactly what is necessary for petty theives. It may be harsh but I don't think it would be a bad idea to bring whipping posts back.
Oops... The word I meant to use was capital punishment. What I had meant to say was "capital punishment should be more commonly used but I don't think it should apply to everyone". Capital punishment should be used more in cases of murder and rape and various other crimes. Corporal punishment (and monetary) should be enforced for "lesser" crimes such as theft and vandlism etc.
I agree "raben"..that they should get a good whippin..but other than that I dont think petty crimes should get the death penalty. Yes, In some cases it could deter criminals, but theres so many people in society, that don't give a shit, their stupid enough to attempt petty crimes anyway. But either way, something needs to be done in this country, cause personally, I'm tired of paying for it.
Unfortunately we cannot just kill repeated sex offenders under our current legal code, but I don't see why we can't tattoo their crime on their face to everyone knows who they are.
When I affirmed the "three strikes and your dead" quote from Rabenstranger I meant for crimes that are endangering human life and are more heinous than other crimes like drug trafficing.
Crime that endangers the lives or well-being of others should be punished -harshly- that way it would be a warning to others~ i.e. capitol punishment.
